Terms of use

Clear terms for a deliberately small app.

These terms explain the agreement between you and Tether, including how pairing, subscriptions, cancellation, archiving, and deletion work.

Effective July 12, 2026

1. Agreement and eligibility

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are a legal agreement between you and Bud Johnson, operator of Tether (“Tether,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). By downloading, creating an account, purchasing, or using Tether, you agree to these Terms and the Privacy Policy.

You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, a parent or legal guardian must permit your use. Do not use Tether if applicable law prohibits you from doing so.

2. Accounts and private connections

You are responsible for accurate account information, safeguarding your password and store account, and activity under your account. Notify us promptly if you believe the account has been compromised.

Tether allows one active private connection per account. Pair only with someone who has knowingly agreed to connect with you. An invite is personal; do not publish it or use it to mislead another person. Either person may archive the connection at any time.

Tether is a communication experience, not an emergency, safety, medical, monitoring, or location service. Do not rely on a nudge, presence indicator, notification, or delivery status to determine another person’s safety or availability.

3. Acceptable use

You may not use Tether to:

  • harass, threaten, stalk, pressure, impersonate, exploit, or harm another person;
  • connect with someone without their consent or evade an archived or ended connection;
  • attempt unauthorized access to accounts, pair spaces, servers, or data;
  • interfere with service operation, probe security, automate abusive requests, or reverse engineer except where law expressly permits;
  • upload or transmit unlawful, infringing, malicious, or deceptive material; or
  • use Tether in violation of law or another person’s rights.

We may restrict or terminate access when reasonably necessary to protect people, Tether, service providers, or legal compliance.

4. Tether Premium subscriptions

Tether offers free core functionality and optional Premium access. Current localized pricing, duration, introductory offers, and included features appear in the purchase screen before you confirm.

Pair-level access

One active Premium entitlement unlocks eligible Premium features for both people in the purchaser’s current active connection. The purchaser remains the subscription owner. If the connection is archived, the purchaser retains personal Premium access while the former partner’s shared access may end.

Billing and renewal

Monthly and annual Premium subscriptions are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play. Payment is charged to the store account at confirmation. Unless canceled, a subscription automatically renews for the same period at the then-current price. The store may charge within 24 hours before the current period ends.

Introductory trial

Where displayed and where the store determines you are eligible, the annual plan may include a seven-day introductory trial. At the end of the trial, the annual price is charged automatically unless canceled before the trial ends. Eligibility and trial availability are controlled by the store.

Cancellation

Cancel through Tether Settings → Manage subscription or directly in the store account. Deleting the app, signing out, archiving a connection, or deleting a Tether account does not automatically cancel billing. Cancellation normally stops future renewal while access continues through the paid period, subject to store rules.

Changes

Stores may localize prices and taxes. If pricing or features change, required notice and consent will be handled according to store rules and applicable law.

5. Refunds

Store purchases are subject to the refund rules and consumer protections of the store and your region. Tether cannot directly reverse an Apple transaction. Google Play requests may be handled by Google or, where available and appropriate, the developer. See the Tether Refund Policy and instructions.

6. Archiving, deletion, and termination

Archiving ends the active connection and preserves its read-only relationship vault. It is not account deletion.

Account deletion permanently removes the account and associated Tether data, including pair records and shared history. Because the history belongs to a pair, deletion can also remove shared history from the other person’s vault. Follow the account deletion instructions.

You may stop using Tether at any time. We may suspend or terminate access for material or repeated violations, security threats, legal requirements, service discontinuation, or conduct that creates risk. Sections that by their nature should survive—such as intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, and dispute terms—continue after termination.

7. Ownership, feedback, and service availability

Tether, its software, design, branding, artwork, and documentation are owned by Bud Johnson or licensed to him and are protected by intellectual-property laws. These Terms grant a personal, limited, revocable, nonexclusive, nontransferable license to use Tether as provided through an authorized store.

If you send feedback, you allow us to use it without restriction or compensation, while you retain ownership of any rights you already hold.

Tether depends on internet access and third-party authentication, database, real-time, notification, and store services. We may change, interrupt, or discontinue features. We do not promise that a notification will arrive, that another person will be present, or that the service will always be uninterrupted.

8. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tether is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, noninfringement, uninterrupted operation, or error-free delivery. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so portions may not apply to you.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tether and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages; relationship decisions or communications; missed or delayed notifications; lost data; or unauthorized account use. Total liability for claims relating to Tether will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid for Tether in the 12 months before the claim or US $50. This limit does not apply where prohibited by law.

You agree to indemnify and hold the operator harmless from claims arising from your unlawful use, violation of these Terms, or infringement of another person’s rights, to the extent permitted by law.

9. Governing law and changes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except that mandatory consumer law in your home jurisdiction continues to apply. Courts located in Chatham County, Georgia will have jurisdiction where permitted.

We may update these Terms as Tether changes. Material changes may be announced in the app or by another appropriate method. If you do not agree to updated Terms, stop using Tether.

10. App store terms

On Apple platforms, Apple’s Standard End User License Agreement applies in addition to these Terms. Apple is not responsible for Tether’s maintenance or support, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of the license terms where applicable.

Google Play use is also subject to the applicable Google Play Terms of Service. If these Terms conflict with mandatory store terms, the mandatory store terms control for that platform.
