I’m a dad of four and I know how hard it is to take care of yourself when you have a lot going on. But, I found a way to lose weight, feel better, and be happier just by changing the way I eat. It’s called intermittent fasting and it might be something that can help you too!

Before I found out about intermittent fasting, I was unhealthy, heavy, and didn’t have a lot of energy. I wasn’t happy with how I looked and it was hard for me to do things. My self-image was suffering, and I wasn’t sure what to do to fix it. I knew I had to change, but I didn’t know how.

A little before and after photos for you

That’s when I learned about intermittent fasting. At it’s simplest, it’s when you only eat during a certain time of the day. There are SO MANY studies that show that it can help people who are overweight or obese. By only eating for a certain amount of time, I was able to lower my blood sugar, make my body use insulin better and burn fat.

For some of those studies you can refer to these incredible resources:

  • Dr. Ronda Patrick’s site, Found My Fitness has an entire section on fasting.
    • From her site, “A growing body of evidence suggests that in the absence of ready supplies of glucose and fats from meals, fasting flips a metabolic “switch,” liberating fat stores via fatty acid oxidation and ketone production while prioritizing the safeguarding of lean muscle mass and function.”
  • Dr. Andrew Huberman’s site, Huberman Lab: has an incredible transcript and long-form video to teach you EVERYTHING about IF.
    • “In this episode, Dr. Huberman discusses the science and practice of fasting, also called time-restricted feeding. He reviews the data on how limiting food intake to specific portions of every 24-hour cycle (or fasting longer) impacts weight loss, fat loss specifically, liver health, mental focus, muscle, longevity and more. Dr. Huberman explains how “fasted” is contextual and relates to blood glucose levels and their downstream effects, and how the depth of fasting can be adjusted with behaviors such as different types of exercise or with glucose disposal agents.”
    • Link to the YouTube Video here: https://youtu.be/9tRohh0gErM
  • Dr. David Sinclair’s lab can be found here. He’s done INCREDIBLE research into lifespan longevity, and recommends (and adheres to) an 8 hour eating window!

At first, I thought it would be hard to not eat for a long time. But after 2 weeks, my body and mind got 100% used to it. I found that when I wasn’t eating, I was more focused and when I was eating, it had become almost a treat! The wildest part is that I lost 70 pounds! I went from 220 to 150 pounds!

But, the best part was that I felt better and had more energy. My whole life got better because of it.

If you want to try intermittent fasting, it’s important to remember that it’s not a quick fix. It takes time and effort. Try different times to see what works best for you. And don’t worry if you slip up, it takes time to change the way you eat.

Intermittent fasting changed my life and I hope it can change yours too. Being a dad is hard work, but taking care of yourself makes it all worth it. If you need encouragement, prayer, or direction about Intermittent Fasting, or any of the linked health tips, I would GEEK OUT and love talking about it.
